Jun 4, 2009, It's Hurricane Season - Do You Know Where Your Windstorm Certificate Is?

I know, I know, it's just the beginning of June and I'm talking about hurricanes but if you own and home in a Texas coastal county, then you need to know what a Windstorm Certificate is. In order to reduce the damage caused by wind, the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) has issued guidelines and rules for building and remodeling in coastal counties.

The three major areas of concern are roofs, exterior doors (including garage doors) and windows. Homes located closer to the coast have more stringent rules. The rules dictate which materials and/or manufacturers are approved by the TDI as well as the size and type of fasteners used and the spacing of those fasteners. The installation will need to be inspected by a certified windstorm inspector. The inspector needs to be able to see how the construction was done so be sure the inspection is done before walls are closed and fasteners are covered up.

Once the construction passes the inspection, the inspector will issue a Windstorm Certificate also known as a WPI-8. If you're having a new roof, exterior door or windows installed, you might want to include in the contract that the contractor is responsible for securing the windstorm certificate. Often contractors in Galveston County are familiar with the windstorm inspection process and they have an inspector they work with.

If you are a do-it-yourselfer, read about the windstorm specifications at the Texas Department of Insurance's Windstorm website, Texas Department of Insurance. Windstorm inspectors can be pricey, but you can contact the TDI to make an appointment with an inspector from the State and it's free.
